Mustard oil is a staple cooking oil especially in Indian cuisine and some countries worldwide. It’s in every household kitchen and hardly any dish is cooked without it. Although it’s naturally made and has health benefits and has been used for centuries in Asian cuisines, excess consumption is not considered healthy because it also has some dangerous side effects for our bodies which we might not even know. 1 Contains Erucic Acid

Mustard oil contains a whopping 42-47% of erucic acid. What so bad about it? Well it’s a very harmful fatty acid compound (monosaturated Omega 9 fatty acids), which is actually known to be highly toxic in nature. Due to such copious amount of erucic acid in mustard oil its natural it will create health problems for us in fact intake of high levels of mustard oil causes cardiovascular diseases, respiratory issues, diarrhoea, anaemia and now we come to the scary part, it can also cause cancer, coma and even death in the most severe cases.

Now that we know Mustard oil contains high amount of erucic acids we must know it can pose serious threat to our heart and damage it significantly. It causes a medical condition called Myocardial Lipidosis. In lay man’s term it is also called the “fatty degeneration of heart”. Fibrotic lesions are created in myocardial fibres or heart muscles due to the fast build-up of triglycerides or fat droplets. It damages the cardiac muscles badly and causes heart failure.

Erucic acids in mustard oil distresses our lung muscles too. At the initial level it just effects the upper respiratory systems (especially respiratory tracts), causing troubled breathing and so on. But the long-term intake of mustard oil can make us prone to lung cancer which is fatal.
4 Leads To Dropsy

Mustard oil caused the level of dropsy to spike so high that in 1998 Delhi government put a ban on the use of mustard oil to control the spread of this deadly disease. It’s basically the most severe form of edema in which the soft tissues of human body start hardening up and swells up due to unusual fluid accumulation.
