But we often forget, they are humans too with a back-story before they became the stars as we know them today, and many of those stories are really tragic and downright dangerous. 1 Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron is beautiful, tall, elegant and super talented. She has also won and Oscar and a golden globe award with several others achievements too. But this 43-year-old star had a nightmarish childhood. Growing up in South Africa she had an alcoholic, physically abusive father who was a habitual wife beater. At the age of 15 he actually stared to fire his shot gun to threaten his wife and daughter when eventually Charlize’s mom took her own gun and shot her father and killed her in front of her daughters’ eyes!

Her trials didn’t end there; she always wanted to be a dancer and specifically a ballerina when she entered a choreographic school. But here again a knee injury at the age of 19 shattered her dreams to be a dancer. Broken, she left for L.A where she had no money and connection or aim about her future and lived in cheapest hotels and sometimes starved as she had no money to buy food.
Finally, in 1995 when she went to a bank to get her 500$ check her mom had sent and couldn’t encash it because the bank teller refused, she created such a big fuss that she caught attention of John Crosby the producer. He helped her to get in an acting school and 3 years later she was starring in a big budget movie with Keanu Reeves and Al Pacino in The Devil’s advocate. And the rest as they say is history.

Among celebrities with tragedies, Jim Carrey is a legend and an iconic actor known for his talent the world over. When he was a kid his family hit a financial rough patch after his dad lost his job. He started a new one in a wheel making factory where he enlisted all his kids to help him out with the jobs. So, Jim and his siblings did the entire menial task from washing the toilets to cleaning the floors of the shop. Even this job did not last long and they had to live in a RV till his father found another job in Burlington where they settled for 8 years.

At the same time Jim’s mother was developing mental neurosis called hypochondria which was debilitating for the family. Finally, his father took 15-year-old shy Jim to a local comedy club called yuk-yuk in Toronto. Here too his first 2 stage forays were nightmarish so much so that the crowd got furious. It took him 2 whole years to gather up his courage and confidence to appear again on that stage which he took by storm this time. This was his path to several stand-up comedy gigs and TV shows and finally Hollywood.
3 Demi Moore

Demi Moore is also among celebrities with tragedies, Demi Moore’s biological father abandoned her even before she was born. She was just 3 months old when her mom married another guy called Dan who was a newspaper advertising salesman with no job stability and gambling problems in which he finally lost everything and to make the matter even worse both of them had alcohol addiction.

Demi Moore has always been considered a sexy starlet but she had a major body issues while growing up and was among celebrities with a sad past. She wore braces and was cross eyed for which she wore thick glasses and was bullied at school. Her mom saved enough money for her to have an eye surgery to save her from her daily harassment.
Life after this consistently went downhill especially after her brother was born when she was 15, and she ran away from her home many times. Her parents got divorced and 2 years later her step father committed suicide. At 17 she decided to move out for good and fell in love with Freddie Moore a rock star who left his wife and children to marry her. It was through Freddy she got her chance in Hollywood. Although she grew to be a superstar her mom still battled alcohol addiction and was arrested for drunk driving a couple of times. In the end her mother was diagnosed with cancer and she died several months later.

He may not be among celebrities with a tragic past, but has had his fair share of problem in his life from his youth. In 1980 he met with a serious accident in a ski resort which put his career on hold for 3 long years. In 2003-2004, Michael and his wife Catherine had a hellish experience thanks to a deranged stalker called Dawnette Knight, who claimed to be obsessed with the actor and sent threat letters to Catherine, some of which were so graphic in content that she almost had a mental breakdown.

The struggle doesn’t end there, in 2010, Michael’s son from his 1st marriage Douglas was given a 5 years prison sentence for drug peddling. The same year the actor was diagnosed with throat cancer believed to be the result of constant stress, alcohol consumption and smoking but fortunately he recovered in a year.
Finally, it was Catherine’s turn to be diagnosed of Bi polar disorderin2011 which in return caused severe depression to Michael and they decided to divorce after 13 years of happy marriage. But better sense prevailed and the couple are still together and going strong.
5 Oprah Winfrey

She was the 1st black women to be a billionaire, but her child hood story sounds straight out of a Hollywood horror movie. Her mom was a housemaid with no time to take care of her. So, she spent 6 years of her formative life with her granny till her mom took her back to a ghetto area of Milwaukee. This is where her true nightmares began. She was just 9 years old when she was repeatedly abused and molested by her uncles, own cousins and her uncle’s ‘friends.

Her mom sent her to her father who was ready to pay for her education and by 17 she won awards for eloquence and joined the Tennessee state university where she studied communication. She became a CBS reporter and rest is history.
