Usually cancer survival rates are measured in 5 years statistics, but patients of mesothelioma survival rates are measured in 1-3 years. As of the statistics available to us today, nearly 55% of mesothelioma patients live longer than 6months, while about 35% live near to a year, unfortunately only 9% survive longer than5 years.
Mesothelioma survival rates depend upon many different factors

Mesothelioma survival rates depend upon many different factors such as the location of cancer in the body, the gender, age, patient’s overall health, and other characteristics. Usually Testicular and peritoneal cancer patients have better shot of longer survival followed by pleural and pericardial mesothelioma. Unfortunately, this disease can be rarely cured therefore the longer the patient survives thebetter analysis can be made for future prognosis as well as new strategies can be implemented to elongated the life expectancy of the present patient as well.

What we all must understand when dealing with this deadly disease and its treatments. Mesothelioma survival rates means the number of patients who survived this disease for duration of time after the illness was diagnosed. Life expectancy in this area means years or months of patient’s survival depending on the staging, location of the tumour, cell type and patients’characteristics.
Survival rates for Mesothelioma patients have increased in recent years especially in the case of pleural and peritoneal cancer. This can be attributed to advancements in technology which helps in quick diagnosis and new treatments. The 2 biggest factors which affect the Mesothelioma survival rates are the following.
Gender and Age

Since younger patients have overall better health and coping mechanisms their survival rates are usually higher5-year survival rates than their senior counterparts.Whereas the older patients might already have other illnesses or medical condition which impedes their improvements. Females patients have an overall better and longer survival chances which is true in any sort of cancer treatment. Its because men have more exposure to asbestos which makes their survival rates slimmer.
Another big factor effecting Mesothelioma survival rates is the staging of the cancer

This means the stage of the cancer when it was first diagnosed in the patient makes an obvious difference in their survivalrates. Needless to say, early diagnosis, leads to better prognosis and usually have higher survival rates than the advanced diagnosed cases. So, if the cancer is already at the level 3-4 it means it has spread to large part of the body makingit difficult to target and eliminate it. If thecancer on the other hand is diagnosed as early as in 1-2 stage it means it’s still localised and can be surgical and other aggressive medical methods.

Apart from these 3 there are other factors too which effects the Mesothelioma survival rates of the patients like- Lifestyle of the patients, if the patients is a heavy smoker than his level of survival is low, then comes the genetics factor which means if the patient has biomarker BRCA1- associated protein-1 (BAP1) he/she will survive longer. Next comes the cell type of the patients, epithelioid mesothelioma has better survival rates followed by biphasic and sarcomatoid mesothelioma. Blood counts also makes a lot of difference, high level of platelets or white blood cells and low haemoglobin is usually very bad news, finally the overall heath condition of the patient, factors like overweight or a weak immune systemleads to high mortality rates too.
Improving Mesothelioma Survival

There are ways to improve the mesothelioma survival rates as well these days and patients’ needs to be educated about them. new treatments in case of an early detection can save lives here. Usually doctors prescribe, the new combination of surgery as well as heated chemotherapy wash or hyper thermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy which has greatly improved the 5-year survival rates to 50%. Also, clinical trials and immunotherapy have also shown positive results in the other cases of this cancer.
In stage 1-2

In the case of stage 1-2 cancer detection aggressive chemotherapy and surgery can help which cannot be used as much on the older patients or the patients with stage 3-4 level of tumour. This is because the cancer has usually reached the lymph nodes and other organs but still radiation therapy and chemotherapy can be used for extended survival.
Mesothelioma survival rates are higher in pleural Mesothelioma patients who undergo aggressive treatments, surgeries and radiations, medically called pleurectomy/decortication or extra pleural pneumonectomy (EPP) which is common in all sorts of multimodal treatment plans. For peritoneal mesothelioma patients who undergo cytoreductive surgeries (CRS) with HIPEC have much better survival rates as compared to the ones who cannot have the surgery. If combined with systematicchemotherapy along with CRS plus HIPEC the survival rates jumpup to 67%.
