65,000 dollars worth of jewelry extracted from woman’s stomach
Believe it or not but doctors removed more than 65K worth of jewelry and metal coins from a woman’s stomach in India recently. The woman just 22 had been complaining of abdominal pain and nausea after eating and was finally admitted to hospital.
Surgeons astonished at the horde of jewelry
The woman was rushed to the Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital in Rampurhat West Bengal India. They were totally astonished when they performed surgery on her to find a huge stash of gold in her stomach. When she was rushed to the hospital on July 16th, she was totally emaciated and in a very weak condition. Doctors just could not operate in her immediately.
Sonograms showed only metal in the stomach, doctors had no inkling what it would be
When the women underwent ultra sonograms and X-Rays, They showed metal in her stomach. However never in their wildest dreams did doctors think that the metal would turn out a horde of gold. It was only after the surgery did they discover an amazing 1.6 kgs of gold that included trinkets, metal jewelry, gold coins and even a watch.
The woman ate gold jewelry
The head of the surgical department Doctor Siddhartha Basu who also did the operation said she had ingested the gold, copper and brass objects knowingly and after that she just couldn’t eat anymore and had to stop eating. But why did she do that. “The patient looked weak and emaciated at the time when she was admitted to the hospital. Her albumin and haemoglobin count were so low that we could not perform an operation soon.”
She had been stealing the items from a family shop but why?
Incidentally, the woman had been stealing from her brothers costume jewelry shop. A family member revealed that they kept finding items missing from their shop. The women when interrogated about it broke down crying and denied it even as the evidence was extracted from her stomach.
She was in a critical condition
The woman’s condition was so critical that she required five bottles of blood and was administered a TPN (Total Parenteral Nutriton) that injected food through her mouth. After some days she was stabilized for surgery and operated on within a week. Her operation lasted 1 hour and 1t5 minutes where surgeons removed chains, nose rings, earrings, trinkets, bangles, and anklets from her stomach – as well as 90 coins and a wristwatch.
She suffered from pica and was eating the jewelry
The conclusion of the woman’s case was attributed to pica an eating disorder that involves eating items not considered food like mud, or cement and metal. Animals do it a lot. Warning signs include constantly craving for non food substances like soap, string, cloth, powder, metal or paint among many others.
The woman had been taken to several doctors with no result till she was finally diagnosed at the Rampurhat Medical College Hospital. A weird but rare case indeed. At least the shop got back their jewelry.
